Fighting City Hall: Entry Deterrence and New Technology Upgrades in Local Cable TV Markets
نویسندگان
چکیده
This article investigates the use of technology upgrades by incumbent firms in response to potential entry by government firms. Using a dataset of over 3000 US cable TV systems, the article presents evidence consistent with entry deterrence theory. Incumbent cable systems are more likely to upgrade when located in a market with a government-owned potential entrant. However, the same systems are then less likely to offer new products enabled by the upgrade, suggesting upgrades occur for strategic, not demand-related, reasons. In addition, incumbent cable systems are more likely to respond to threat of entry from government-owned entrants than from private entrants. Understanding the extent to which managers of private incumbent firms respond to potential entry from government firms is especially important in light of recent US government entry into several industries, but also has implications for competition between firms with different objectives.

Do incumbent cable TV firms act to deter entry by cities? I use variation in the costs for a city to enter and operate in local cable TV markets to show that incumbent cable TV firms use system upgrades to deter entry by cities. Interestingly, incumbent cable TV firms do not use system upgrades to deter entry by private firms. My research demonstrates that private incumbents actively engage in ...

This paper develops a new approach to testing for strategic entry deterrence and applies it to the behavior of pharmaceutical incumbents just before they lose patent protection. The approach involves looking at a cross-section of markets and examining whether behavior is nonmonotonic in the size of the market. Under certain conditions, investment levels will be monotone in market size if firms ...
متن کاملComponent-Based Technology Transfer in the Presence of Potential Imitators
T transfer to low-cost locations offers global firms an opportunity to reduce their variable costs involved in serving emerging markets. However, such moves may also make imitation by local competitors easier. As a consequence, technology transfer may create competition in the local market. We introduce component-based technology transfer for the global firm as a means to deter or accommodate t...

This article introduces technology choice into a Hotelling model of spatial competition. This yields two entry deterrence devices, as well as complex strategic choices for the firms and a rich picture of industry structure. Depending on cost parameters and market size, firms may choose to over-invest or to under-invest. Industry structure is typically asymmetric either in terms of the locations...
